Most-Googled Skincare Qs

While Dr. Google has a lot to offer, we will do better: we asked the world-renowned Derm-Scientist® Dr. Macrene to answer the most-searched skincare questions of the year. Read Dr. Macrene's expert answers below and learn everything you ever wanted to know about skincare.

How can I lighten sunspots/ hyperpigmentation, and how long will it take to see results?

Short Answer: Apply the High Performance Face Serum daily, and get laser treatment as a supplement if needed.

Dr. Macrene: "Prescription lightening products such as hydroquinone can help reduce brown spots, but I do not recommend this unless you have a condition called melasma. In general, it's best to use skincare daily and laser treatment as a supplement if needed. My MACRENE actives High Performance Serum is a powerful brightening serum that has been proven to lift, even the skin tone and reduce brown discolorations with organic plant-derived ingredients such as vitamin C, glucosamine, ergothioneine, arginine, and amino acids. Results can be expected by the 4th week with twice a day continuous use."

Can you mix retinol with vitamin C?

Short Answer: Yes when used at different times of day.

Dr. Macrene: "Vitamin C is a well-known antioxidant, which also serves as an important cofactor in collagen synthesis and when in acid form can have a peeling or brightening effect on the skin. However, vitamin C can be irritating, just like retinol can, so I recommend limiting vitamin C-containing serums and other products to the mornings, and retinol, of course, is restricted to nighttime application. You can get the most stable forms of vitamin C as well as a mix of potent plant-derived and marine-derived actives in the High Performance Serum."

What is the best skin/routine in winter to help skin look its best?

Short Answer: Wash your face with lukewarm water and apply your moisturizer immediately while the skin is still damp.

Dr. Macrene: "Firstly, an important key to proper winter skincare relies on proper adjustment to the lower temperatures and lack of humidity in the air. You must decrease the temperature of the water when washing your face to lukewarm, rinsing well, and pat drying while the skin is still damp to apply your High Performance Face Cream and Serum to lock in hydration. In terms of treatment, I completed the Volite trial as an investigator in the US recently which is a filler I use in my practice in Europe; this filler is used superficially in the skin and draws in water to re-hydrate skin and restore its youthful luminosity. As an approximation of this, I included micro-encapsulated hyaluronic acid in the High Performance Serum  to deliver it into the skin and restore hydration daily."
