Causes of Undereye Circles
Dark undereye circles may be caused by a combination of dilated blood vessels, wrinkles or anatomic indentations, and brown spots, as described in detail in Dr. Macrene Alexiades's textbook, COSMETIC Dermatologic Surgery (Wolters Kluwer).
Treatments of Undereye Circles
The medical, cosmetic and surgical treatment options are discussed in her book but include topical agents that serve to reduce dilated blood vessels, diminish edema and increase collagen to reduce wrinkles. Laser approaches include devices that target the deeper layers of skin to increase collagen and elastin, as well as resurfacing lasers that remove a layer of skin to induce a wound healing effect. Chemical peels are an alternative approach to resurfacing. Finally, surgical blepharoplasty serves to remove flaccid eyelids and undereye fat pads.
Skincare
As your Derm-Scientist® I formulated MACRENE actives to address the key issues contributing to dark circles. The High Performance Cleanser which is gentle and plant-derived may be used to wash off makeup as well as for a proper cleanse. While skin is damp, I recommend you quickly apply the High Performance Face Cream, followed by the Serum. Repeat twice daily for best results. In the daytime or before going out for dinner or an event, apply the High Performance Concealer for a complete correction.
