Dr. Macrene’s Recommendations for Blue Light Exposure

1. Blue light is everywhere. Most of your exposure occurs when exposed to the sun, but there are artificial sources of blue light  — emitted from your cell phone, computer screen, fluorescent and LED lights.
2. Blue light may lead to premature aging of the skin. “Blue light has high energy and therefore is able to penetrate deep into the skin. I caution my patients when using their devices because it is possible that excessive blue light exposure may be harmful to skin,” says Dr. Macrene.
3. Blue light contributes to hyperpigmentation such as melasma. It can possibly cause photoaging and the breakdown of collagen as well, which leads to wrinkles and skin laxity. Much like sun exposure, the damage of excess blue light exposure is cumulative.

Stay Protected While Connected
Blue light protection skincare works by physically blocking the light and fighting off free radicals formed by blue light before they can damage your skin and cause photoaging, collagen breakdown, sagging, and dark spots.
"For best results, look for products that contain ingredients that block and inactivate blue light: zinc, titanium, & iron oxides plus free-radical scavenging antioxidants such as superoxide dismutase and vitamin C," suggests Dr. Macrene. All of these active ingredients can be found in Dr. Macrene's formulation of the High Performance Tinted Moisturizer and Concealer, which contain blue and UV blockers combined with over 45 clinically efficacious plant-derived active ingredients including the most stable form of Vitamin C, resveratrol, green tea epigalleins, ginkgo terpenoids, and superoxide dismutase—the strongest antioxidants discovered to date—to deactivate free radicals at a high level.
To get stronger blue light and UV SPF protection, Dr. Macrene recommends applying your High Performance Tinted Moisturizer which has natural sunscreens and then applying your sunscreen on top fifteen minutes prior to exposure.
4. Blue light can impact your sleep cycle, Blue light from devices can disrupt the circadian rhythm negatively impacting your sleep cycle and also your skin cells, potentially causing skin harm over time.
