Ask Dr. Macrene:How To Clear Acne

Holidays are upon us with cocktail parties and gatherings, and the last thing you need is to worry about cysts and pimples! Listen to Dr. Macrene as she discusses adult acne and how to address it. "For a quick fix this season pre-party, dab your pimple with a sulfur preparation. You can leave this on as you get ready and let it dry. Once dry, you can apply your MACRENE actives tinted moisturizer on top, which is mica-free, talc-free and will not exacerbate acne. This way your sulfur medicine is working underneath while you are covered for a clean finish." - Dr. Macrene

Dr. Macrene Tips:
What To Avoid If You Have Acne

Powder
Acne and oily skin often go together, which is why powder is often applied to neutralize the shine. Watch out! "Powder spicules get lodged in pores and can cause plugging, subterranean comedones, and breakouts," says Dr. Macrene.

Mica & Talc
An insidious cause of acne is the presence of mica and talc in liquid makeup and tinted moisturizers. "Not only do they exacerbate acne, but mica is mined by underage children and talc is associated with ovarian cancer; therefore, I have omitted them from my formulas," states Dr. Macrene. Dr. Macrene recommends using a mica-free, talc-free, non-comedogenic tinted moisturizer, the High Performance Tinted Moisturizer for a flawless finish that is therapeutic for your skin with its countless antioxidants and blemish-reducing actives.

Silicone
Silicone is a red-flag ingredient used to increase water resistance in a formula. However, it can clog pores and cause break outs.
In her High Performance Tinted Moisturizer, Dr. Macrene replaced silicone with silybum marianum (milk thistle) ethyl estera, a natural plant-derived silicone alternative that acts as a skin barrier protectant and natural plant-based texture agent.

Oils
Oils are acne culprits, which slowly seep down the hair follicle and gradually cause blockage, resulting in the overgrowth of bacteria in the bottom of the follicle that evolve into deep-seated cysts. "Oftentimes, the patient does not associate their cystic acne with oils because it develops insidiously over the course of weeks to months," cautions Dr. Macrene. "I formulated the High Performance Tinted Moisturizer in an oil-free formula so that it is safe for my acne-prone clients."
