Should You Start an Entirely New Skin Care Routine All at Once?

Not so fast. According to Macrene Alexiades, MD PhD PLLC, dermatologist and founder of DR. MACRENE actives, overhauling your entire routine at once can do more harm than good: “I recommend changing one product at a time and not changing your entire routine at once. If you're looking to change your entire routine, try one new product each week.” This approach makes it easier to pinpoint what works—and what doesn’t.

The Right Way to Switch Products

While it may be tempting to buy an entirely new lineup, a gradual approach is best—and more budget-friendly. Dr. Alexiades recommends focusing on the products you use daily, especially your cleanser, moisturizer, and serum. It’s also important to review ingredient lists and swap out anything potentially irritating.

Finally, don’t skip exfoliation. “Regular exfoliation is crucial for removing dead skin cells and promoting cell turnover,” Dr. Alexiades says. Alternating between chemical exfoliants (like AHAs or BHAs) and gentle physical exfoliants can help keep skin smooth and radiant—while allowing your other products to absorb more effectively.
